Cathkin Braes Report & Video

The 5th round of the SXC series took place on 9th August at Cathkin Braes, the venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Mountainbike race. Over 200 riders, including no less than 6 current British Champions, took part on a tough figure of eight course with a mixture of mud, roots, rocks, steep climbs, slippy descents and a 3 metre high scaffold bridge!

The first win of the day went to British Juvenile champion Stuart Wilcox (Inners MTB Racing/ i-cycles) with Ben Miller in second and Ross Wilcox (Inners MTB Racing/ i-cyles) in third. In the girls race Lucy Grant (Glentress Riders) got the better of Yuka Gallagher (777 MTB Club) with Louise Borthwick (Edinburgh RC) in third. In the youth category, British Champion, Grant Ferguson (Dooleys Cycles) continued his domination winning by 2 minutes from Irish visitor, Matthew Adair (Banbridge Cycling Club) with Ryan Fenwick (Stewartry Wheelers/ MPG Cycles) a further 3 minutes back. The female youth race was won by British Champion Katy Winton (Glentress Riders) with her team-mate Hannah Ferguson in second. Ewan Clark (Drumlanrig/ Rik’s Bike Shed) returned to form to lead from start to finish in the junior race, with Jamie Maxwell (Nevis Cycles RT) finishing second and Ian Lee (Derwentside CC) third.

British Champion, Alex Glasgow (Nevis Cycles RT) demolished the rest of the field in the veterans category, beating Kenny Kentley (Velo Ecosse) by seven minutes, with Gary McCrae (Team Leslie Bikeshop – Right Move Windows) a further 2 minutes down. In the female veterans category, British champion Anne Murray, made it 5 wins out of 5, with SXC newcomer Nicola Diggins (Cairngorm CC) in second place. Gregor Grant continued his domination of the Grand Vets category, with a winning margin of 9 minutes over Billy Matthews (Square Wheels). Alan Boyd (Perth City Cycles) finished 3rd to take his first ever SXC podium place. The female Grand Vets race saw Fiona Paton win in her first ever race, with Mary Wark (Fullarton Wheelers) in second and Lesley Yarrow (Stirling Bike Club) in third. Despite having ridden a 50 mile TT already that day, Sandy Wallace (Sandy Wallace Cycles) managed to pull off another win in the Super Vets race, with John Walker (Walkers Cycling Club) in second and Sandy Allan (Sandy Wallace Cycles) in third.

Judi Oates (Square Wheels) won the Female Masters race from Margo Denholm (Rockhard Racing). Morven Brown (Rockhard Racing) continued her winning form in the female sport race with Kathryn Doris in second. In the female elite race Lee Craigie (Square Wheels) won by a massive 11 minutes from Anne Ewing (Edinburgh RC) with Mona Petrie a further 5 minutes back in third.

In the Masters race, Paul McInally (Rock & Road Cycles) had a fast start and led for the first 3 laps, but slowed in the final lap and was overtaken by Paul Newnham (Edinburgh RC) and Gordon Bathgate (Square Wheels) who battled it out with a delighted Bathgate taking his first ever SXC win. Tim Mackley (HPR UK (Ltd) also stepped on top of the podium for the first time, winning the Sport race from Iain Haworth (Stirling Bike Club) and David Arnott (Peebles CC) In the elite mens race the early pace was set by Dave Henderson (Pedalpower.org.uk/Endura RT) closely followed by Andy Barlow (Dirt School). Henderson gradually pulled away from Barlow to win by 2 minutes. James Fraser-Moodie (Pedal Power RT) managed to hold on to third place despite a nasty crash.
