Cathkin Braes Competitors Information

Camping - We are recommending Strathclyde Park for camping/caravanning. Camping is neither permitted nor advisable in Cathkin Braes. They've said that you don't need to book, but it would be as well to. It is 10 miles to Cathkin Braes from here. http://www.northlan.gov.uk/leisure+and+tourism/parks+gardens+and+play+services/strathclyde+country+park/strathclyde+country+park++camping+and+caravan+site.html

Course - There is over 200m of climbing per lap, and the course is over 7km long - so is quite physical with 4 tough climbs, and has a mixture of fast singletrack and steep technical descents. You should get away with fast tyres for the bulk of the course, but if it continues to rain, the final climb can be tricky without a grippy tyre on the rear! The course has a cross-over point, which will be facilitated by a temporary bridge. In the worst case scenario, the bridge may not be in place, in which case we will operate a carefully marshaled crossing – with clearly marked right of way (descending riders will have right of way) – it shouldn’t come to this, but just in case!

Saturday Practice – The car park will be open from 12pm – 4pm on Saturday, and the course will be marked with white painted arrows on the ground on Saturday. The course won’t be marshaled for practice on Saturday – so please be very careful, and give way to other park users! Please don’t come to practice outside of those hours unless you live locally and can ride up, as we don’t want to clog up the public car parks.

Getting there - please approach the race from the Rutherglen/East Kilbride direction, as this will avoid tailbacks of traffic on the faster side of the road, and keep traffic through Carmunnock Village to a minimum. Event Village Postcode is G73 4SE for those with clever things like Sat-Nav - the car park is across the road from Cathkin Braes Golf Club (although any large vans, caravans or campervans will be directed to park at the Golf Club as the entrance to the event village is narrow). The event village can be found on the multimap link - http://www.multimap.com/maps/?zoom=15&countryCode=GB&lat=55.8045024080373&lon=-4.20327086753969&dp=904

Parking - the normal car park on Cathkin Road should not be used by competitors/spectators etc - we will have a separate car park at the race village which will be open on the Saturday (12pm – 4pm) and Sunday (7am – 7pm). Please do not park in the officials car park, as there is extremely limited space for vehicles and the arena infrastructure. The main car park is a good size, but it will still be important to park carefully, and close together to maximize the number of cars we can get in! Large Vehicles will be directed to park at Cathkin Braes Golf Club – 250m from the main car park – please listen to the parking marshals!

Security - Strathclyde Police and Glasgow City Council Park Rangers will have an increased presence in the park in the weeks leading up to the race, and on the day, but please be vigilant - don't leave cars unlocked or bikes lying around - this applies to all our venues!

Other Park Users - Cathkin Braes is popular with dog walkers and families - please be aware of this if you are practicing on the course, when there will be no marshals in place, and be courteous and polite - how we are perceived at the SXC race will have a bearing on the development of the long-term trails and the Commonwealth Games.

Course Feedback - The 2014 Team and Glasgow City Council will be using this event to gain feedback on how the venue works, and how MTB racers view the course, the features people would like to see on the course - so please take the time to fill in the questionnaire that will be available at sign on (I'll start a thread for feedback on the forum as well.

Volunteers - with such a big and busy park, we need a lot of marshals to keep the race course safe for competitors and park users, so if you or anyone you know would like to help out, please contact me (
info@sxc.org.uk

) - at the viewpoint, south of the Red Circle.
